Hospital Treatment
The decision to go to hospital for treatment must be an informed decision made by the sufferer. Some indications that hospital may be necessary include failure of outpatient treatments, physical deterioration to a point where health or life is at risk, marked physical comorbidity that complicates treatment, notable psychiatric comorbidity, or lack of outpatient treatment. Patients often require more intensive treatment than outpatient care can provide. Often control and choice are impaired and the sufferer has great difficulty changing her behavior. Multidisclinary behavioral specialty units are clinically well established for achieve rapid weight restoration. Partial hospitalization has been found effective in eventually achieving weight restoration in up to 50% of AN patients, however these gains are slower.
