Diagnosis Impact

It is important to consider how changes associated with age impact diagnostics. For instance, depressed older adults are more likely to present somatic symptoms, psychomotor agitation, increased irritability, and are less likely to report a depressed mood. Older adults are thought to have fewer fears than younger ones, but lower levels of fears can interfere with the lives of older adults just the same. Interesting. There is evidence that subclinical levels of anxiety and depression often exists with older adults and needs to be addressed. The issues of competency and capacity for decision making is often called into question at some point during older adulthood. Competency may be called into question and need to be assessed. Capacity is the ability to comprehend information relevant to the decision, deliberate, and communicate. Adults are competent until otherwise determined by a court and capacity is one factor in competency decisions.

Death and dying is inevitable and age brings this inevitability closer. Thus, there is a need for the clinician to consider these issues. Often interventions involve amelioration of any unpleasant physical symptoms, attempts to meet emotional needs, educating, and investigating the cause of problems for the patient. Making the dying process as comfortable as possible is also an important objective of the clinician.
