Meditation

Some research points to the effects of lowering arousal and rest as providing the therapeutic benefit of meditation. Others believe that meditation provides a unique therapeutic property. At least meditation provides a “guilt free” rest, which is something that most people find difficult. Both yoga and meditation can have aspects that concentrate on focused breathing and this alone has beneficial psychophysiological effects such as, increase heart rate variability. Yoga has also been found to be especially effective in counteracting the negative impact of stress. Yoga and Meditation has been found effective in sharply reducing anxiety and depression. Some researchers found that this effect only occurs with those who are experiencing high or average anxiety levels and not those with low levels of anxiety, panic attacks, and/or long-term severe anxiety. However, a group of psychiatric inpatients was found to be able to have reductions in medications after several weeks of meditation. Several researchers have demonstrated that meditation lowers psychophysiological indicators of stress. Furthermore, meditation was found to be more effective at this than biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation, as demonstrated by more frontal alpha, greater cardiac deceleration, and fewer cognitive symptoms of anxiety.
