Mediation and Health
Meditation has been associated with positive effects on health and cognition. The majority of meditation research examines individuals with extensive training or participants in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs. To investigate the effects of brief meditation on mood and cardiovascular variables a brief mindfulness meditation program was compared to a sham mindfulness meditation program and a breathing control group. The researchers point out that MBSR requires a considerable expense, a trained facilitator, a day of silent retreat, and takes approximately 8 weeks to complete. This commitment makes a brief alternative a valuable suggestion.
The Profile of Mood Stated (POMS), the State/Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and changes in blood pressure and heart rate were used in the study. Results showed greater changes in distressed mood and heart rate in the brief meditation group then the sham and control groups. This shows a significant effect of brief mindfulness meditation training in promoting self-regulation and improving heart rate. The reduction in heart rate suggested that brief meditation might also promote cardiovascular improvement.
