3 Aspects of Meditation

Clinical meditation can be divided into three aspects: breath awareness, open-focus mindfulness techniques, and guided mindfulness meditation practice.  Breath awareness focuses on the breath as a way to cultivate and reengage the attention when it becomes caught up in analytical thinking. The breath is a potent focus of attention because it is always present, highly sensitive to stress reactions, and is inherently rhythmic in nature. This then serves to disengage reactivity and cultivate a positive physiological feedback system that brings sympathetic and parasympathetic responses into better balance. As such I would focus on breath awareness to begin.

Meditation can include a wide range of practices including relaxation, building internal energy, and developing compassion, love, patience, generosity, and forgiveness.  Meditation is often used to assist in creating a sustainable concentration that allows a person to enjoy engagement in life.
