Open Awareness
Open awareness in considered the core of meditation. This acts to bring awareness to experience the body and the mind, to disengage the reactive and analytical mind, and to engage in mindfulness more easily and fully during daily activities. In open awareness one gently rests attention on whatever has risen to the realm of consciousness. The guided awareness involve the goal of first increasing awareness in relation to the target issue and then modifying the cognitive, behavioral, or emotional response and reactivity to these experiences. Introducing meditation to after a relationship is developed and the topic of meditation is introduced is important. Examining the beliefs, preconceived notions and any uncomfortable feelings associated with the topic is also important. Providing some education on the topic for the client to have a context helps. Depending on the client demands I might use meditation exclusively or in conjunction with psychotherapy.
