Chronic Stress

The body can manage acute stress with very little health consequence. However, chronic stress can have many deleterious health consequences. Some of the symptoms of stress can include inappropriate crying, nervousness, edginess, anger, and irritability. Chronic stress symptoms can also include feelings of unhappiness and dissatsfaction, empty and directionless. As well, chronic stress can lead to foggy thinking, distractibility, forgetfulness, being critical of self and others, headaches, fatigue, restlessness, and sleep disturbances. People can also have somatic complaints such as, unexplained backaches, muscle tension, gastrointestinal discomfort, and increased heart rate and blood pressure. These symptoms can vary in intensity and can lead to functional impairment. These feelings can also lead to unhealthy management strategies such as, self-medicating with tobacco and/or alcohol, as well as other compulsive behaviors.
