ED Therapeutic Relationship

A therapeutic relationship develops and ongoing mutual negotiations of treatment goals, their nature, and the pace of treatment occurs.  Multiple developmental processes are considered as precipitating experiences of great distress and instable body development.  For instance, exposure to weight and fat prejudice, sexualization and objectification, and increased pressure to fit into peer based norms.  This takes places often with minimal adult support and increasing academic pressure.  Empowerment also involves acknowledging that often adolescents do not have the power to stop emotional, physical, or sexual abuse by adults and recognizes that adults not exerting their just authority will exacerbate adolescents feeling unsafe and out of control.  Feminist therapists are aware that adolescents rebel against authority if they believe it is being unfair, autocratic, controlling.  Treatment for eating disorders is aware that these control issues may be create a focus on food as a power struggle.  The use and misuse of power and adultism is continually considered.
