Mental and Physical Factors

Breathing is influenced and dependent on both mental and physical factors. Respiratory measures reflect the state of the individual. Breathing is the only vital function this is open to conscious awareness and modification and an individual may voluntary modify breathing patterns in order to change mental or physical tension states. Breathing, therefore, acts as both a regulator and an indicator. Spontaneous breathing is difficult to monitor because it often changes when focused upon. Although changes in mental and physical states may be attributed to respiration, they may be caused by concomitant changes in the entire body systems that affect both respiration and the outcome parameter. It remains important to remain aware of this and that breathing instructions may consist of instructions for posture, body movement, or attention.
