Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback conceptualizes the body as a stable system with complex patterns of oscillation (Giardino, Lehrere, & Feldman, 2000). In a well-regulated body, these oscillations have complex patterns and are of relatively high amplitude (Lehrer et al., 2007). Changes from this configuration represent indications that the body’s self-regulatory mechanisms are either damaged or inefficient and unable to withstand stress, disease, and injury (Lehrer et al., 2007). HRV is one marker that biofeedback can influence. Decreased HRV is associated with a variety of diseases and exposure to physical and emotional stress (Lehrer et al., 2007). The HRV biofeedback method teaches people to control the oscillatory variability in hearth rate and, therefore, targets the body’s own physiological control as opposed o indirect targeting via teaching control of blood pressure, heart rate, skin temperature etc.
