Tsang, Fung, Chan, Lee, and Chan (2006) explored the psychosocial effects of a Qigong exercise program on elderly people with depression. The researchers used a randomized controlled trail with 82 participants who had depression. The intervention group underwent a 16-week period of Qigong practice. After eight weeks the intervention group showed improvements in mood, self-efficacy, personal well being, as well as physical and social domains of self-concept. This study supports the notion that exercise can lead to positive psychosocial changes in elderly populations with chronic physical illness and depression.
