Stress Reduction Techniques
The following techniques to manage stress one focuses on reducing central nervous activation and another focuses on addressing maladaptive appraisals and coping strategies. Part of the assessment for stress management involves having the belief that the person will improve if provided treatment. The treatments that include central nervous system reduction include progressive relaxation, autogenic training, biofeedback, yoga-based stress management, and meditation. Group training in mediation or progress muscle relaxation results in recovering from a stressor quicker and having reduced somatic, cognitive, and general state anxiety. The training involves 20 minutes of the training followed by one1 minute of stressors and then 10 more minutes of training. Cognitive approaches to stress include using cognitive-behavior techniques to exposing the patient to the stressful stimuli while re-evaluating their idiosyncratic cognitive patterns. This re-evaluation process invites the patient to learn to re-structure previous appraisals and replace them with appraisals that assists in deescalating an automatic emergency response and bring attention to resources at hand that can assist in managing the stressor. Negative cognitive appraisals predicted more severe post-traumatic stress disorder in people who were informal caregivers of stroke survivors.
